It is no wonder that each of its many municipalities have rich and varied pasts that can be seen and explored to this very day.

The region of Albufeira is one such region that not only contains some of the best beaches and resorts in Portugal but also has plenty to keep those interested in history busy and entertained. Over two thousand years ago the area was occupied by Romans who developed the region into a hub for mining and fishing. Throughout the ages, Albufeira has seen great changes (growing from a town into a city, for one) and still contains many important historical sites depicting its progression into what is known as the Algarve’s capital of tourism.

Some of the oldest buildings to be found in Albufeira are churches and chapels, each unique and containing many different ages of architecture both inside and out. Arabian structures remain to this day around the peninsula; many are just ruins but are remnants from the 8th century when the peninsula was invaded. One such landmark is Paderne castle, this marvellous example of military architecture is one of seven strongholds built in the twelfth century. Even though it is mostly in a ruinous state it draws a huge amount of visitors each year, all eager to explore some of Portugal and the Algarve’s rich history.
